Copenhagen Climate Change Conference
COP15 Dec 7th – Dec 18th
In three weeks the United Nations Climate Change Conference takes place in Denmark. This is the successor summit to that which was held in Kyoto (1997), and also can be traced back to the Earth Summit in Rio (1992).
It is hoped that nations will be able to agree on a new set of policies that will succeed the Kyoto Protocol in establishing real cuts in global carbon emissions.
In order for COP15 to be a success we need to put pressure on the UK government: On the 5th December there will be a march in London for people to demonstrate their support for action to take place on a reduction in world carbon emissions.

Greener Fields – revisited
It’s now been a month since our last post detailing the progress of the Greener Fields project, and WHAT A MONTH! The owners of the garden have been enjoying fresh spinach and rocket since the end of may. But the biggest changes have occurred since the start of June.
Tomatoes are itching to turn red, courgettes are 6 inches long, potatoes have flowered and the first bulbs are ready for digging up, and cauliflowers have begun to sprout out.
For the family living on the Greener Fields site it has been amazing to see the development of the vegetable patch.
We at Greener Builds are just as ecstatic, the vegetables have done better then we could have imagined….just take a look at the photos your self.
Green Roofing in London
Yet another green roof in suburbia; bringing green to London.
Greener Builds teamed up again with Rofa: Living Roofs to install another green roof. Check out the photos as this new roof begins to take shape

The benefits of green roofs are many; from increasing biodiversity, to reducing storm water runoff. Greener Builds uses this system, which is quick and most importantly, light wieght.

Greener Fields – Allotment update
Flowers, Plants and Vegetables
All of the seeds in the Greener Fields allotment have now had a couple of months to sprout and develop, and what a magnificent sight for the owners!
In just 3 months this ‘back of the garden’ unused space has started to show real signs of becoming a positively thriving veg patch.
As the current plants continue to grow, and new seeds are sown, the space will continue to fill out! The owners ”can’t wait to taste the future fruits’.
Garden maintenance man, Phil Taylor, says; ‘things are going really well, it is uncanny how well all that has been planted has taken. I suspect we owe much of the current success to the rich compost that was added, which was mostly taken from the owners own home-made supply.’ Currently there vegetables growing in the garden include; rocket, lettuce, beetroot, spinach, broccoli, cabbage, onions, spring onions, leeks, garlic, courgettes, broad beans and French beans (of many varieties), chilli’s, potatoes, tomatoes, pumpkins, and sweet corn, and many various herbs. These will continue to be planted throughout the summer months, giving a continued supply of fresh vegetables.
Continue checking out our blog to see how the plants in our veg garden grow and mature.

Meeting with Sadiq Khan a success!!!!
The presious hour of Sadiq’s time was used to explain what the local FoE group have been campaigning about and how Sadiq whould push this campaign through in the commons. On the agenda was also the effects of the Budget 2009 on the UKs CO2 reduction targets and measures to elleviate climate change.
Sadiq was very responsive to al questions poossed to him, which was a pleasent and refreshing response from an MP. Although when asked about how the 1.5 billion set aside for CO2 reduction would get spent, and the fact that 400 million of which would be set aside for home energy reduction measures… equating to roughly £20 per household…. his answer, ‘the UK is doing the best world wide to eleviate climate change issues’. Hmmmmm.
On the hole very responsive and thoroughly down to earth. Sadiq offered much advise on the up and coming FoE campaign (The Big Ask) and how we might implement local pressure for change in our area.

Friends of the Earth meet MP Sadiq Khan
Today at 8pm Greener Builds members will be joining the local Friends of the Earth ‘Wandsworth’ group who have given us an hour of his valuable time to ask some questions. On the agenda this evening is Renewable Energy and a new FoE campaign, Sustainable Streets. Towards the end of the meeting it is hoped that Sadiq will be able to answer a few questions on what the Budget (announced yesterday) means for the UK and our environment.
We look forward to hearing the outcomes of this evenings meeting!
